CONTRIBUTING EDITOR • YOGA TEACHER, THERAPIST
Monique discovered the power of stillness at the age of 13, when she stumbled upon one of her dad’s transcendental meditation books. From then on, she read everything she could on the subject, and practiced regularly. At 15, she tried yoga for the first time and knew it would be a lifelong love. After obtaining her 200-hour certification in 2009 under the tutelage of Liz Mandarano, Monique taught vinyasa flow yoga and meditation. Around this time, Monique entered graduate school for mental health counseling, and developed an interest in trauma treatment. In 2012, she earned a 40-hour certificate in trauma-sensitive yoga instruction with David Emerson and Bessel van der Kolk. She has studied yoga anatomy with Ray Long and mindfulness meditation with Ron Siegel. Monique has been teaching yoga at various Hudson Valley studios since 2009. A self-professed word nerd, she has also been writing for assorted online outfits since 2011 under several noms de plume. Monique is now a licensed mental health counselor with a private psychotherapy practice in Poughkeepsie, New York. She specializes in treating post-traumatic stress and anxiety, as well as helping clients empower themselves within oppressive sociocultural systems.
